I am 23. I know what you are thinking.

What does a 23-year-old know about ageing, decline, and the fear of losing independence?

Here is the answer. I was born with transposition of the great arteries - a congenital heart condition with a 10% survival rate. I died in a lift on the way to the hospital at three weeks old. They brought me back. I had open-heart surgery shortly after.

I have never taken cardiac medication. Not once. The reason is simple: fitness has been my medication since the day I was born. My doctors monitor me every two years. They tell me my markers are excellent. The only variable that explains that is how I have treated my body.
